Everything You Need To Know About Long-Range Shooting

admin Ecology Ammunition

One of the competitions that does not attract too much attention like Super Bowl does is shooting discipline. It has several categories and plenty of competitions, tournaments and challenges. Apart from the great community, it is a great matter that contains a lot of knowledge you must be familiar with.

Whether you plan to get yourself wind meter for shooting practice or you want to know where to start with this adventure, you have come to the right place. We will try to include as many questions as possible to cover a broader range of this matter.

The definition of long-range shooting

Long-range shooting is one of those challenges where you need to have skill, be familiar with physics and be responsible in terms of weapon handling to ensure safety. The term long-range denotes the shooting discipline where a shooter fires at designated targets while calculating ballistics, distance and other features that are part of this discipline. As a shooter has to take everything into consideration, this discipline is one of the hardest and requires a lot of experience with weapons.

What is the distance you are shooting at?

The long-range shooting is usually reserved for a range that is between 400 to 1200 yards. Anything below 400 is considered to be close-range, while anything above 1200 is extra-long. The main difference between close and long distances is the bullet drop that you have to take into consideration.

So, if you have a moving target, the distance of 500+ yards, it means that you have to compensate the movement, range and bullet drop to hit the target. All these things make it so hard and demanding.

What is the best caliber for the discipline?

This is something that is very hard to determine as everyone has their own techniques and preferences but in the majority of cases, the military long-range shootings are based on 300 Winchester Magnum ammunition in 6 and 6.5mm cartridges.

When choosing the ammunition, you should consider BC or Ballistic Coefficient, which says about the exact bullet trajectory that you need for calculating long-range targets. In addition, there are also other things that you need to consider for the precise trajectory like the weapon’s firing azimuth, altitude, sight position and more.

What special tools do you need?

Apart from gun and ammunition, you probably do not need anything else, but, for example, Windmeter is a great tool to have. It is highly valuable in the case when you shoot at 1 mile+ distance as it helps you to determine the direction and speed of the wind.

Therefore, you can calculate the trajectory of the bullet more precisely since the long-range shooting is all about precision and math. In addition, you can get a range finder if you go on random shooting to spot a nice random target. It helps you to determine the distance of the target which is crucial for firing a successful and precise hit.
